Galfan gabions are flexible stone-filled cages manufactured from double-twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh coated with Galfan alloy, a zinc-aluminium mischmetal coating. The two common Galfan formulations are 95% zinc + 5% aluminium and 90% zinc + 10% aluminium. This alloy coating delivers significantly better corrosion resistance than standard hot-dip galvanizing, making Galfan gabions the preferred choice for long-term projects in aggressive environments.
For even higher protection in saltwater, acidic or heavily polluted conditions, we also supply Galfan-plus-PVC coated gabions. The additional PVC jacket adds extra resistance to abrasion and chemical attack. All gabion baskets and mattresses are flat packed for cost-effective shipping and simple on-site assembly, using lacing wire or spiral binders to connect panels before filling with stone.

Coating Performance & Relevant Standards
Galfan coating outperforms pure zinc galvanizing in independent corrosion testing: approximately 2–3 times the service life in salt spray environments and around twice the lifespan in sulphur dioxide atmosphere tests. Our Galfan gabions comply with widely recognised standards including ASTM A975, ASTM A856M, ASTM A641 and ASTM A90. Galfan plus PVC coated versions can meet C4 environmental exposure class requirements.
Minimum coating weights for reference: Galfan coating on mesh and lacing wire ≥ 245 g/m²; Galfan coating on thicker selvedge edge wire ≥ 255 g/m². When PVC is added, the PVC layer thickness ranges from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm.
Typical Applications
- River regulation, channel lining and flood control structures
- Coastal protection, seawalls, marine revetments and seaport works
- Slope stabilization, rockfall protection and retaining walls
- Soil reinforcement, dam overflow and scour protection
- Bridge abutment protection and headwall construction
- Landscaping, garden walls and decorative architectural features
