What Are Galvanized Gabions?
Galvanized gabions are rectangular wire mesh baskets made from double-twisted hexagonal woven mesh. After being filled with stones on site, they form a flexible, permeable structural unit that can be stacked into retaining walls, riverbank protection, slope stabilization, and similar civil works. The galvanized coating on the steel wire protects against rust and extends service life compared with plain black wire.
Each basket arrives flat-packed to save shipping space. On site, you simply open it up, fasten the edges with the supplied lacing wire, fill it with locally available stone, and close the lid. No concrete or heavy machinery is required for assembly.
Why Do Projects Use Galvanized Gabions?

Galvanized gabions are a practical choice where drainage and flexibility matter more than a rigid, solid wall:
- Good drainage: Water can pass through the mesh and the gaps between stones, which reduces hydrostatic pressure behind the wall.
- Flexible construction: The double-twist weave keeps the basket intact even if a wire breaks, and the structure can settle slightly with the ground without cracking.
- Low maintenance: The zinc coating slows corrosion; the stone fill itself needs little upkeep.
- Easy to transport: Flat packing lowers freight cost, and assembly only requires basic tools.
- Local fill friendly: You can use locally sourced rock, broken concrete, or rubble, which cuts material hauling cost.
Please note: plain hot-dip galvanized wire is suited to general land and freshwater exposure. For saltwater splash zones or highly acidic soil, we recommend a thicker zinc coat, Galfan (zinc-aluminium), or PVC-coated options instead.
Common Applications
- Retaining walls for roads, driveways, and gardens
- Riverbank and channel erosion control
- Flood protection and bank revetment
- Slope stabilization and landslide prevention
- Gabion fences, acoustic barriers, and landscape feature walls
- Coastal and waterfront works (use Galfan or PVC coating for salt exposure)
Can We Match Your Project Drawing?
We supply galvanized gabions by the basket or by the pallet. Send us your required size, mesh opening, wire diameter, zinc coating weight, and quantity, and we will quote based on your specifications rather than pushing a fixed standard size.
Standard Specifications
| Item | Common Standard Option | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Hot-dip galvanized steel wire | Electro-galvanized, Galfan, and PVC-coated are available on request |
| Weave type | Double-twisted hexagonal mesh | Two twists at each joint for stability |
| Mesh opening | 60×80, 80×100, 100×120 mm | Other openings can be quoted to your drawing |
| Mesh wire diameter | 2.4 / 2.7 / 3.0 mm | Heavier wire available for high-load projects |
| Selvedge (edge) wire | 3.0 / 3.4 mm | Thicker than mesh wire for a firm frame |
| Lacing wire | 2.2 mm | Used to tie panels and close the lid |
| Box size (L×W×H) | 1×1×1, 2×1×1, 3×1×1 m | Custom lengths, widths, and heights available |
| Internal diaphragms | Every 1 m in long baskets | Added to keep fill evenly distributed |
| Finish | Zinc coated; flat-packed | Spiral binding or tie wire supplied |
